MATHEMATICS Overview

Section 1: Numbers & Operations
In section 1, students understand place value through millions, compare &
order, add & subtract whole numbers. Students solve for an unknown,
generalize a pattern by stating a rule, and complete a function table using a
given rule. Students explore the identity/zero, commutative and associative
properties. Students continue to develop proficiency with basic facts.
Students find multiples and factors of numbers in order to help with mastery
of multiplication and division fact families. Students practice estimation and
reasonableness of answers. Students examine equivalent periods of time and
determine elapsed time.
Section 2: Fractions & Decimals
In section 2, students study the relationship between fractions and decimals.
Students recognize, name, compare, and order fractions and decimals.
Students practice adding/subtracting fractions with like denominators and
decimal fractions. Students use models and pictures to multiply a fraction by
a whole number. In addition, students explore probability concepts.
Section 3: Organize & Use Data
In section 3, students organize and display data in a variety of ways,
including line plots, line graphs, and circle graphs. They analyze the
appropriateness and inappropriateness of various data displays. Students
determine the mean, median, mode, and range of data. Students explore,
model, and identify place value in large numbers. In addition, student’s
identify/classify/draw angles and describes how points, lines segments, rays,
and angles are related.
